What are the treatment options for measles?

A clinician may assess the rash, fever, breathing and general condition, while considering whether measles exposure needs to be reported or managed. There is no routine medicine that removes the measles virus immediately. Care usually includes drinking regularly, resting, and using age-appropriate fever relief when advised. Avoid sharing towels, cups and close indoor space because measles can spread readily before and after the rash appears.

Some people need closer observation, especially young children, pregnant people, adults with reduced immunity, or anyone who is not managing fluids. A clinician may check for complications affecting the lungs, ears, hydration or nervous system. Vitamin A may be considered for some children under medical supervision; do not start high-dose supplements without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for difficult or fast breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, inability to drink, very little urine, or a child who is becoming unusually floppy. Get prompt advice if fever persists, the person deteriorates after seeming better, or an earache, chest pain or severe headache develops.
