What are the treatment options for leukaemia?

Leukaemia is a group of blood cancers, so treatment depends on the exact type, how quickly it is behaving, blood counts, genetic features of the cancer cells and your general health. A bone marrow biopsy can show how the marrow is producing blood cells and help classify the disease.

Chemotherapy uses medicines to destroy or control leukaemia cells. Targeted therapy acts on a particular feature of cancer cells. A stem cell transplant replaces diseased marrow-forming cells with healthy stem cells after intensive treatment in selected situations. Blood transfusion support can provide red cells or platelets when the disease or treatment lowers them.

Your team may arrange blood tests, marrow testing, infection checks and organ assessments before treatment. Tell them about medicines, allergies, dental problems, recent infections and any plans for pregnancy or fertility preservation. Ask how treatment will affect work, visitors, food safety and daily activities.

Keep a written list of symptoms and temperature readings if your team recommends this. During treatment, follow instructions about hand hygiene, medicines, appointments and when to call the hospital. Do not take supplements or non-prescribed medicines without checking first.

Call your treatment team urgently for fever, chills, new bleeding, black stools, severe mouth sores, worsening shortness of breath or sudden weakness. Seek emergency help for confusion, fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness or bleeding that does not stop.
