Jock itch, also called tinea cruris, is a fungal infection affecting the groin and nearby upper thigh skin. It can cause itch, scaling, redness, and an expanding edge. The scrotum is often less involved than the surrounding skin, but other rashes can look similar. A clinician may need to examine the border and consider other causes before treatment.

Keep the groin clean and thoroughly dry, change out of sweaty clothing promptly, and choose loose breathable underwear. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend a topical antifungal treatment; apply it to the affected skin as directed and do not stop early just because itching settles. Oral antifungal treatment may be considered when the infection is extensive, recurrent, or not responding to topical care.
