What are the treatment options for intertrigo?

Intertrigo develops where skin rubs against skin and heat or moisture remains trapped, such as beneath the breasts, in the groin, abdomen, or armpits. The fold may feel sore, raw, itchy, or burning. Yeast or another infection can join the irritation, especially when the area stays damp, so treatment depends on what is seen on examination.

Clean the fold gently and pat it dry rather than rubbing. Wear breathable clothing, change damp garments, and use a soft dry barrier to reduce skin-on-skin friction. A clinician may advise a topical antifungal treatment when yeast or fungal overgrowth is suspected. Prescription antiperspirant may help selected people whose sweating keeps the fold wet, but it should not be applied to cracked or inflamed skin without advice. Avoid fragranced products that sting.

Arrange a review if the rash spreads, becomes increasingly painful or warm, smells unpleasant, drains fluid, or develops blisters or open areas. Fever, feeling unwell, or rapidly worsening redness needs prompt attention. Medical assessment is also useful when the rash keeps returning, because psoriasis, allergy, yeast, and bacterial infection can require different treatment.
