What are the treatment options for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer?

Hormone receptor-positive breast cancer has receptors that can respond to oestrogen, progesterone, or both. Hormone therapy reduces hormone stimulation or blocks its effect on cancer cells. An aromatase inhibitor lowers the production of certain hormones after menopause and may be used in other situations with specialist guidance. CDK4/6 inhibitors target proteins involved in cell division and may be combined with hormone therapy for selected cancers.

The plan also considers whether the cancer is confined to the breast, involves lymph nodes, or is advanced, along with menopausal status, previous treatment, other illnesses, and personal priorities. The treatment team may use one medicine, a sequence, or a combination.

Ask whether the aim is to reduce recurrence risk after local treatment or control cancer that has spread. Discuss menopausal symptoms, bone health, joint or muscle symptoms, blood tests, and medicine interactions. Tell the team about pregnancy plans, blood clots, liver problems, and medicines or supplements. Do not stop hormone treatment because of side effects without discussing alternatives or symptom support with the oncology team.

Contact the care team for severe or persistent side effects, new leg swelling, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, jaundice, unusual bleeding, or a fever. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or sudden neurological symptoms. Report new bone pain, headaches, or other changing symptoms so they can be assessed in context.
