What are the treatment options for glandular fever?

Glandular fever, also called infectious mononucleosis, is a viral illness that may cause profound tiredness, sore throat, swollen glands and fever. A GP consultation can assess your symptoms and may arrange a blood test when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms are persistent.

Antibiotics do not treat the virus itself. Treatment may include suitable pain or fever relief, fluids and rest. A clinician can check whether another infection or a complication needs attention.

Rest when fatigue is strong, drink regularly and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Avoid alcohol while unwell and check with a pharmacist or clinician before taking medicines, especially if you have liver problems.

Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and contact sports until a clinician says they are safe, because the spleen can become enlarged during glandular fever. Do not share drinks, cutlery or toothbrushes while symptoms are active.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe abdominal pain, fainting, unusual bleeding, confusion or yellowing of the skin. Contact a clinician if fever is worsening, fluids are difficult to keep down or exhaustion is preventing basic activities.

Ask whether a blood test is useful, which pain relief is suitable, when you can return to work or exercise, and what symptoms should trigger urgent review.
