What are the treatment options for follicular lymphoma?

Some people are observed with planned examinations, blood tests and scans when the lymphoma is not causing troublesome symptoms or organ problems. This approach is active monitoring, with treatment started if the clinical picture changes.

Chemotherapy uses medicines that damage or stop dividing lymphoma cells. Targeted therapy is designed to act on features found on lymphoma cells or on signals that help them grow. The choice, combination and timing depend on biopsy findings, affected areas, symptoms, general health and previous treatment.

Follow-up after cancer treatment checks for response, side effects and signs that the lymphoma has changed. A haematology team can explain what each result means and when the next review is due.

Ask which symptoms should trigger an earlier review and keep a current medicine list. During treatment, report fever, chills, unusual bruising, breathlessness, persistent diarrhoea or signs of infection. If monitoring is recommended, attend appointments even when you feel well. The purpose is to detect meaningful change early and avoid treatment decisions based on symptoms alone.

Contact the oncology team promptly for fever, shaking chills, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, severe weakness, confusion or bleeding that is difficult to stop. Emergency care is appropriate for collapse, severe breathing problems or new one-sided weakness.
