What Are the Treatment Options for Erythema Multiforme?

Erythema multiforme is an immune-mediated rash that can produce target-shaped spots and, in some people, blisters or sores. A clinician considers recent infections, medicines, the amount of skin involved, and whether the eyes, mouth, or genitals are affected. Mild skin symptoms may settle with supportive care and prescribed topical corticosteroids. Treatment is tailored because mucosal involvement can require closer monitoring.

Keep affected skin clean, avoid rubbing, and use recommended moisturisers or soothing measures. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice, but tell the clinician about every new medicine taken before the rash began. If herpes simplex is a suspected trigger, antiviral treatment may be considered to shorten or prevent episodes. A topical corticosteroid may be used for selected inflamed areas under clinical direction.

Seek urgent medical help for painful mouth sores that limit drinking, eye pain or light sensitivity, difficulty swallowing or breathing, widespread blistering, or skin that is peeling. Fever, marked weakness, or rapidly worsening lesions also warrant prompt assessment. These features can signal more extensive mucosal or skin involvement and should not be managed only at home.

Ask what may have triggered the episode, whether your eyes or mouth need examination, and how to care for any open areas. If episodes recur, ask whether antiviral treatment could be useful and how to recognise early warning signs.
