Short answer

Treatment for dehydration replaces lost fluids and salts with oral rehydration or intravenous fluids, while the underlying cause is assessed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First option
Small, frequent sips of an oral rehydration solution may replace water and salts.
Escalation
IV fluids may be needed when dehydration is severe or drinking is not possible.

How rehydration works

Dehydration can follow vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, sweating, poor intake, or increased urination. Treatment depends on how much fluid has been lost and whether you can drink and keep fluids down. Oral rehydration solutions contain water and salts in a balance that helps the intestine absorb fluid. Severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, confusion, or inability to drink may require IV fluid therapy in a clinical setting. The cause also needs attention.

What to do at home

Take frequent small sips of an oral rehydration solution, particularly after vomiting or diarrhoea. Continue suitable food when able, and avoid relying on alcohol or very sugary drinks for rehydration. If illness is causing fluid loss, follow advice for managing that illness. A clinician can recommend oral rehydration therapy and explain the appropriate preparation and amount for children, older adults, or people with kidney, heart, or other medical conditions.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little or no urine, rapid breathing, or an inability to keep fluids down. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant medical conditions can worsen quickly and should be assessed early. Get prompt help when diarrhoea or vomiting persists, blood is present, or symptoms do not improve with drinking.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which fluid is suitable, how often to sip it, what warning signs to watch for, and whether medicines should be adjusted during illness. Discuss when IV fluids or a review of the underlying cause may be needed.
