What are the treatment options for clavicle fracture?

Short answer
Treatment for a clavicle fracture may involve a sling or other support, pain relief, follow-up imaging, physiotherapy, or fixation surgery for selected injuries.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Initial support
- A sling or splinting may rest the arm
- Rehabilitation
- Shoulder movement and strength are rebuilt gradually
What affects the plan
The clavicle, or collarbone, connects the breastbone to the shoulder. An X-ray helps show where the break is and whether the bone ends remain aligned. The clinician also checks the skin, circulation, sensation and arm movement. A fracture that is stable and suitably aligned may be managed with support and monitoring. Displacement, skin pressure, an open wound, nerve or blood-vessel concerns, or difficulty maintaining alignment can change the recommendation.
How recovery is supported
Splinting or a sling can rest the arm and reduce movement while the fracture begins to heal. Use it exactly as directed and keep follow-up appointments so alignment and healing can be reviewed. Gentle movement of the hand, wrist and elbow is often introduced as advised, while lifting and contact activities wait for clinical clearance. Physiotherapy later addresses shoulder mobility, posture and strength. Fracture fixation surgery uses hardware to hold selected breaks in position when non-operative care is unsuitable or unlikely to provide useful alignment.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent help after the injury if bone has broken the skin, the skin is tightly stretched over a sharp prominence, or the hand becomes pale, blue, cold, numb or weak. Seek prompt review if pain suddenly increases, swelling is rapidly expanding, the sling causes persistent tingling, or breathing becomes difficult. During recovery, contact the treating team if shoulder function is deteriorating or symptoms are not following the expected direction.
Questions for your doctor
Is the fracture aligned and stable? How should I wear the sling or support? Which arm movements are safe now? What finding would make fixation surgery advisable? When can physiotherapy, driving, work or sport be restarted?

Questions people ask
Does every clavicle fracture need surgery?
No. The decision depends on alignment, skin and soft-tissue findings, function, and how the fracture is expected to heal.
When does physiotherapy begin?
Timing varies with the fracture and treatment. Early exercises may protect nearby joints, while shoulder strengthening usually waits for clinical guidance.
