What are the treatment options for childhood cancer?

The plan depends on the cancer type, where it is located, its extent, the child's age and development, and overall health. Chemotherapy uses medicines that travel through the body and may be combined with surgery or radiotherapy. Proton therapy is a form of radiotherapy that may be discussed when the team is balancing tumour treatment with protection of nearby growing tissues. The specialist team will explain the intended benefit and possible effects on learning, growth, hormones, fertility, and daily life.

Fertility preservation should be discussed before treatment when it may be affected. A survivorship care plan records past treatment, follow-up needs, possible late effects, and health goals after treatment ends. Parents and children should receive age-appropriate explanations and emotional support throughout care.

Ask the team to explain the diagnosis and plan in language your child can understand. Keep a record of medicines, symptoms, appointments, school concerns, and questions. Tell the team about fever, eating or drinking changes, pain, mood, sleep, and changes in movement. Discuss infection precautions, nutrition, school support, fertility, and how your child can take part in suitable decisions.

Follow the oncology team's instructions for fever and call promptly when advised; fever during cancer treatment can need urgent assessment. Also seek prompt help for breathing difficulty, unusual bleeding, repeated vomiting, severe pain, confusion, marked sleepiness, dehydration, or a sudden change in movement. Use the emergency plan supplied by the child's team if symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening.
