What are the treatment options for asteatotic eczema?

Asteatotic eczema is very dry, fragile skin that may look cracked or resemble a fine network of lines. It often affects the lower legs, especially when cold, dry air, hot bathing, harsh cleansers, or friction remove protective oils. The treatment aim is to repair the skin barrier and settle redness and itch.

Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser soon after washing and reapply whenever the skin feels tight. Choose short, lukewarm showers, use a mild cleanser only where needed, and pat rather than rub dry. Emollient therapy can soften scaling and seal in water. If patches remain red, inflamed, or very itchy, a clinician may prescribe topical corticosteroids for a defined course and body area. Follow the prescribed amount and avoid applying steroid cream to sensitive areas unless instructed.

Arrange a dermatology review if cracking keeps returning despite regular moisturising, sleep is disturbed by itch, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, rapidly spreading redness, fever, or painful open fissures, because broken skin can become infected.
