Short answer

Treatment options for an ankle fracture include fracture casting, a walking boot, fracture fixation surgery and rehabilitation tailored to healing and ankle function.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Cast or boot may protect alignment
Unstable injury
Fixation may restore joint position

Why fractures need different plans

An ankle fracture can involve the lower ends of the leg bones or the outer ankle bone, and may affect one or more parts of the joint. X-rays and an examination help show alignment, stability and skin condition. A stable fracture that remains aligned may be protected in a cast or boot. Displacement, joint involvement, open injury or instability may require fixation.

A cast restricts movement while the bone heals; a walking boot can offer protection with easier access for checks when clinically suitable. Fixation surgery uses hardware to restore alignment and hold the fragments steady. Rehabilitation then works on swelling, ankle movement, strength, balance and a safe return to weight-bearing.

What to do now

Keep weight off the injured ankle until you have clear instructions, elevate it, and protect the skin and swelling. Use crutches correctly and attend follow-up imaging or examinations. Do not remove a cast, alter a boot or drive while your clinician says the ankle is unsafe. After surgery or immobilisation, complete the prescribed rehabilitation and increase loading gradually.

When urgent help is needed

Go to urgent care for an ankle that looks deformed, an open wound, exposed bone, severe swelling, uncontrolled pain, numbness, a pale or blue foot, or toes that cannot move. While in a cast or boot, increasing tightness, burning, loss of sensation, fever or new calf pain also needs prompt review.

Questions for your doctor

Is the fracture stable and aligned? How long should I avoid weight-bearing? Would a cast, boot or fixation give the joint the right protection? When can ankle movement and rehabilitation begin?

Questions people ask

When is surgery considered for an ankle fracture?

Surgery may be considered when the fracture is displaced, unstable, open or affects joint alignment in a way that cannot be maintained with protection alone.

Why is rehabilitation needed after a cast?

Immobilisation can leave the ankle stiff and the leg weaker, so guided exercises restore movement, strength, balance and walking control.
