What are the treatment options for acute bronchitis?

Acute bronchitis is irritation and inflammation of the airways, often after a viral illness. It can cause cough, phlegm, chest discomfort, tiredness or wheezing. A cough may continue after the initial infection has settled, so treatment is guided by the examination and the overall pattern of illness.

A GP consultation can assess breathing, temperature, chest findings and medical history. This helps distinguish bronchitis from pneumonia, asthma or another condition that may need a different plan.

Rest, fluids, avoiding smoke and using simple measures for throat irritation can make symptoms easier to manage. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on suitable cough or fever relief, taking account of your age, health conditions and other medicines.

Antibiotic treatment is not appropriate for every episode because many cases are viral. It may be considered when a clinician finds evidence of a bacterial infection or a higher risk of complications. Nebuliser treatment may be considered when there is significant wheezing or difficulty moving air, but it is not routine for every cough.
