What are the symptoms of vulvodynia?

Pain may affect one area or the whole vulva, and it may be present all the time or triggered by touch. Sitting, tight clothing, wiping, inserting a tampon, or sexual activity can worsen symptoms. Some people describe itching, throbbing, irritation, or a feeling of cuts even when the skin looks normal. The condition is not the same as a short-lived infection, so recurrent symptoms need a careful assessment.

Arrange an appointment if vulval pain lasts, returns, or makes sex, movement, clothing, or sleep difficult. A clinician may examine the skin, gently map tender areas, and test for infection or skin conditions. Until reviewed, wash with plain water or a gentle fragrance-free product, avoid perfumed products and tight clothing, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for brief comfort. Treatment may include pelvic floor physiotherapy or vaginal dilator therapy when clinically suitable.

Seek prompt care for new severe pain, ulcers, blisters, bleeding, pus-like discharge, fever, or rapidly worsening swelling. Arrange review for pain during sex that persists, or for symptoms that do not improve after treatment for an assumed infection. Urgent help is needed if pain is severe with faintness or difficulty passing urine.

Ask what conditions should be ruled out, whether your pain is provoked or spontaneous, how the pelvic floor may contribute, and which comfort measures or therapies are appropriate.
