What are the symptoms of varicose veins?

Varicose veins are surface veins that have become more prominent and winding. Symptoms may become more noticeable after standing and may ease when the legs are raised. The skin near the ankle can become dry, discoloured or irritated; persistent inflammation in this area is called stasis dermatitis. Small thread-like vessels are spider veins, which are different from larger varicose veins. Leg pain when walking can have causes unrelated to surface veins.

Gentle movement, avoiding long periods in one position and elevating the legs when resting may help symptoms. A clinician can examine circulation and discuss options such as compression advice or sclerotherapy when suitable.

Seek urgent assessment if one leg suddenly becomes swollen, hot, red or very painful, if a vein becomes hard and tender, or if a leg wound is worsening. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain requires emergency help because a clot can sometimes travel to the lungs.
