What are the symptoms of tear trough hollows?

The indentation usually follows the inner lower eyelid and may continue toward the cheek. It can make the under-eye area look darker because the hollow creates a shadow, even when the skin itself is not deeply pigmented.

Some people notice a visible change after facial volume decreases, while others have naturally prominent hollows. Thin skin, fluid retention, lighting, and nearby under-eye bags can change how strongly the groove shows. The appearance may be present on both sides but is not always identical.

Compare the area in consistent lighting and without makeup, and note whether the change is gradual or sudden. Gentle sun protection and moisturising can support the surrounding skin, but creams cannot recreate lost volume.

A dermatology or oculoplastic assessment can distinguish a hollow from pigmentation, swelling, or a protruding fat pad. Options may include under-eye filler, eyelid surgery, or fat transfer, depending on anatomy and goals.

Arrange a clinical assessment if one-sided under-eye change appears suddenly, follows an injury, or comes with pain, redness, marked swelling, vision change, or a new eyelid droop. These features do not fit a simple cosmetic hollow and need examination.
