What are the symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome?

Short answer
Tarsal tunnel syndrome may cause burning, tingling, numbness, or pain along the inside of the ankle and into the sole or heel.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How nerve irritation feels
Tarsal tunnel syndrome involves irritation or compression of the posterior tibial nerve as it passes behind the inner ankle. Symptoms may spread into the arch, heel, or toes and can feel electric, prickling, hot, or aching. Standing, walking, or prolonged activity may bring symptoms on or make them stronger. Some people notice altered sensation or reduced foot strength. Swelling, flat-foot mechanics, an ankle injury, or another local problem can contribute, but similar sensations can arise from other nerve conditions.
What to do next
Arrange an assessment if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, or change how you walk. Note where the sensation starts, whether it follows activity, and whether shoes or ankle position affect it. A clinician may test sensation, strength, reflexes, and the nerve near the ankle. Depending on the findings, physiotherapy, footwear changes, or custom orthotics may be discussed. A cortisone injection is not suitable for everyone and requires individual medical advice.
When to seek care promptly
Seek prompt medical care for rapidly increasing numbness, new foot weakness, inability to lift or control the foot, or severe pain after an injury. Get urgent help if the foot becomes unusually cold, pale, or blue, or if you cannot walk safely.
Questions for your doctor
Does the pattern fit tibial nerve irritation or another cause? How will you assess sensation and foot strength? Could footwear or foot alignment be contributing? Would physiotherapy or custom orthotics help, and what warning signs should I watch for?

Questions people ask
Can tarsal tunnel syndrome cause heel pain?
Yes. Irritation of the tibial nerve can produce pain or altered sensation in the heel, although heel pain has other possible causes.
Can symptoms affect the toes?
They can spread from behind the inner ankle through the sole and into the toes, depending on which nerve fibres are irritated.
