What are the symptoms of shoulder osteoarthritis?

Pain may worsen when reaching, dressing, lifting or lying on the affected side. Stiffness can make it difficult to reach behind the back or raise the arm. Grinding, catching or a rough sensation may occur as the joint moves. Symptoms can build gradually and may become more noticeable after activity or following periods of rest. Rotator cuff problems and shoulder instability can cause overlapping symptoms, so the pattern alone cannot confirm arthritis.

Keep the shoulder moving within a comfortable range and pace tasks that increase pain. Gentle exercises, strength work and activity changes may preserve useful movement. A clinician or physiotherapist can tailor a plan and check for other causes. If symptoms remain limiting, options may include a cortisone injection or, in selected cases, shoulder replacement after a full assessment.

Arrange a review for persistent pain, progressive stiffness, night discomfort or difficulty with washing, dressing and reaching. Seek prompt care after a fall if the shoulder changes shape, becomes very swollen, or the arm is weak, numb, pale or cold. Fever with a hot, red shoulder also needs urgent assessment.
