What are the symptoms of scabies?

The itch can be severe and may disturb sleep. Small red, pink, brown, or darker spots can occur between the fingers, around the wrists, elbows, waist, armpits, nipples, buttocks, or genital area. Fine, crooked lines may mark burrows where mites have moved under the outer skin. Scratching can create crusts, open sores, or signs of bacterial infection.

Infants, older adults, and people with reduced immunity may have a less typical distribution, including the scalp, face, palms, or soles. A rash and itch can have many causes, so a clinician may need to examine the skin and close contacts.

Arrange a GP consultation or other clinical assessment if scabies is suspected, especially when someone close to you has similar itching. Avoid close skin-to-skin contact and do not share towels, clothing, or bedding until you have received advice. Follow the prescribed scabies treatment exactly and ask how to treat household or intimate contacts at the same time. Wash or isolate items as instructed; itching may continue for a while after mites have been treated.

Seek prompt medical care if the skin is covered with thick crusts, if sores are painful or oozing, or if redness, warmth, swelling, or fever develops. These changes can indicate a secondary infection or a more extensive form of scabies. Get advice promptly for a baby, frail older person, or someone with a weakened immune system.
