What are the symptoms of rotator cuff tear?

Short answer
Rotator cuff tears can cause shoulder pain, weakness, reduced movement, and pain that is worse when lifting the arm or lying on the affected side.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a rotator cuff tear may feel
A tear may cause pain at the front or side of the shoulder, especially during reaching, dressing, lifting, or lowering the arm. Some people notice pain at night that interrupts sleep. Weakness can make it difficult to raise the arm, reach behind the back, or hold an object away from the body. A sudden tear after a fall or heavy pull may produce immediate pain and loss of strength; a gradual tear may begin as aching and become more limiting over time. Shoulder stiffness can occur, although marked stiffness may point to another shoulder problem as well.
What to do next
Arrange an assessment if shoulder pain or weakness persists, keeps returning, or interferes with work, dressing, or sleep. Until then, avoid movements that sharply increase pain and keep the shoulder gently moving within a comfortable range. A clinician may compare both shoulders, test strength and movement, and decide whether imaging is useful. Treatment depends on the tear, symptoms, activity needs, and examination findings; options can include physiotherapy and, in selected cases, surgery.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical care after a fall, lifting injury, or sudden tearing sensation followed by inability to raise the arm. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for severe pain with visible deformity, a cold or unusually pale hand, or new numbness in the arm. For ongoing night pain or worsening weakness without an injury, book a routine appointment rather than waiting for symptoms to settle on their own.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what movements are safe, whether your strength pattern suggests a tear, and whether an ultrasound or MRI would change treatment. You can also ask how physiotherapy would be tailored, what recovery milestones to watch for, and when a surgical opinion is appropriate.

Questions people ask
Can a rotator cuff tear cause pain at night?
Yes. Pain may worsen when lying on the affected shoulder or when the arm rests in certain positions during sleep.
Does shoulder weakness always mean a rotator cuff tear?
No. Shoulder weakness has several possible causes, so an examination is needed to identify the source.
