What are the symptoms of ringworm?

The rash may begin as a small patch and gradually enlarge into a round or ring-shaped area. The outer border can be raised, dry, red, or more strongly coloured than the middle. One or several patches may appear on the body, face, hands, or feet. Itching is common, although the intensity varies. The surface may crack, peel, or develop small bumps or blisters along the edge.

A ring-shaped rash is not enough to confirm the cause because eczema and other skin conditions can look similar. Scratching can irritate the skin and may spread fungal material to nearby areas.

Keep the area clean and dry, avoid sharing towels or clothing, and wash items that touch the patch regularly. Try not to scratch, and wash your hands after touching it. A pharmacist or clinician can help decide whether a topical antifungal treatment is suitable; a wider, persistent, or difficult-to-reach infection may need oral antifungal treatment. Use treatment as directed and do not apply steroid cream alone to an undiagnosed ring-shaped rash, because it can alter the appearance and allow infection to spread.

Arrange a medical assessment if the rash is spreading, involves the face or a large area, keeps returning, or does not improve with appropriate treatment. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, pus, increasing warmth, severe pain, or fever, which can signal a complication or another diagnosis.
