What are the symptoms of psoriasis?

Patches may be pink, red, violet, or darker than nearby skin, with scale that can look silvery or pale. They can occur on the scalp, behind the ears, palms, soles, or body folds as well as the more familiar elbow and knee areas. Itch, tightness, soreness, and Dry Skin can interfere with sleep or movement.

Psoriasis may also cause nail pitting, thickening, crumbling, or separation from the nail bed. Some people develop swollen, stiff, or painful joints, which needs medical review because skin symptoms do not describe the whole condition.

Moisturise regularly, use gentle unscented cleansers, and avoid scratching or forcibly removing scale. Keep a record of flare triggers, affected sites, nail changes, and any joint stiffness to discuss at an appointment.

Treatment depends on extent, location, and symptoms. Options may include Topical Corticosteroids, Vitamin D Analogue Treatment, Narrowband UVB Phototherapy, PUVA Therapy, or Methotrexate Treatment under specialist supervision.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for persistent scaly patches, new nail changes, or joint pain and morning stiffness. Seek urgent care for widespread redness with fever, severe skin tenderness, extensive peeling, or a sudden flare affecting much of the body.
