What are the symptoms of plica syndrome?

Short answer
Plica syndrome can cause pain at the inner front of the knee, snapping or clicking, tenderness, and discomfort when bending or straightening.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common location
- Inner front of the knee
- Provoking movements
- Stairs, squats, running, or repeated bending
- Possible sensation
- Painful snap, click, or catching
Recognising the pattern
Symptoms often appear with repeated knee bending, stairs, squats, running, or rising from a chair. The knee may feel irritated after activity, and a tender band can sometimes be felt near the inner kneecap. Clicking does not automatically mean damage; painless sounds are common, while painful catching deserves attention. Swelling may be mild or absent. Similar symptoms can come from the kneecap, meniscus, cartilage, or tendon, so an examination matters when the problem continues.
Practical next steps
Temporarily reduce the movement that repeatedly provokes symptoms and use comfortable, controlled activity instead. Note which positions cause pain, catching, or noise. Physiotherapy may address strength, flexibility, movement control, and gradual loading. A clinician may recommend imaging when the examination suggests another knee problem. Knee arthroscopy is considered only in selected situations when symptoms remain troublesome after appropriate non-surgical care.
When to seek care
Book an assessment if inner-knee pain lasts, returns with ordinary activity, or interferes with sleep, work, or sport. Seek prompt care after a significant injury, if the knee becomes very swollen or hot, if you cannot bear weight, or if it truly locks and cannot move through its range. These features can point to a problem beyond plica irritation.
Questions for your doctor
Where exactly is the painful structure? Do my symptoms fit plica syndrome or another knee condition? Which exercises and activities are suitable now? When would imaging or arthroscopy be considered?

Questions people ask
Does every knee click mean plica syndrome?
No. Clicking can occur without disease; pain, tenderness, or catching makes assessment more useful.
Can plica syndrome improve without surgery?
Many people are managed with activity adjustment and rehabilitation, depending on the cause and persistence of symptoms.
