What are the symptoms of piriformis syndrome?

Short answer
Piriformis syndrome commonly causes deep buttock pain, tenderness and aching, tingling or burning that can travel down the back of the leg.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main pain area
- Deep in the buttock
- Possible spread
- Down the back of the thigh or leg
- Common aggravator
- Prolonged sitting or hip rotation
Why the pain may travel
The piriformis is a small muscle deep in the buttock, close to the sciatic nerve. Irritation in this area may produce Buttock Pain and symptoms that spread through the back of the thigh, sometimes toward the calf or foot. Sitting for a long time, climbing stairs, running, driving or turning the hip can increase discomfort. Numbness, pins and needles or weakness may occur when the nerve is irritated. This pattern can resemble Sciatica, so the lower back, hip and nerve function should be assessed rather than judged from symptoms alone.
Comfort and assessment
Change position regularly, avoid prolonged pressure on the painful buttock and keep activity within a tolerable range. Note whether symptoms are linked to sitting, walking, hip rotation or exercise. Physiotherapy can assess hip strength, flexibility, movement habits and nerve sensitivity. A clinician may discuss Dry Needling or Cortisone Injection in selected cases after considering other causes and the overall examination.
Signs that need prompt attention
Arrange assessment when buttock or Radiating Leg Pain persists, worsens or affects walking, sleep or strength. Seek urgent care for new or progressive leg weakness, numbness around the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe pain after trauma, fever or unexplained weight loss. These warning signs require urgent evaluation because they may indicate a spinal or other serious problem.
Questions for a consultation
Could the symptoms come from my lower back, hip or sciatic nerve instead? Which movements or tests will help locate the source? What sitting and exercise changes are suitable now? How should I respond if weakness, numbness or spreading pain develops?

Questions people ask
Is piriformis syndrome the same as sciatica?
No. They can share radiating leg symptoms, but sciatica usually refers to irritation of a spinal nerve root and needs separate assessment.
Can sitting make piriformis symptoms worse?
Yes. Sustained pressure or a bent-hip position can aggravate buttock pain for some people.
