What are the symptoms of muscle contusion?

Short answer
Muscle contusion symptoms include local pain, tenderness, swelling, bruising, stiffness, and difficulty using the affected muscle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a muscle bruise can feel
A contusion happens when a blow or impact compresses muscle tissue without breaking the skin. The area may hurt immediately or become more uncomfortable as swelling develops. Skin colour can change from red or purple to greenish or yellowish as the bruise settles. Pressing the area, stretching the muscle, or contracting it may increase discomfort. A deeper bruise can make movement feel restricted and may create a firm, full, or lumpy sensation beneath the skin.
A calf or thigh contusion may make walking, climbing stairs, or bending the knee uncomfortable. The appearance of bruising can vary with skin tone, and some contusions are painful without obvious colour change. These features can overlap with other injuries, so the impact, movement limits, and progression of symptoms matter.
What may help at home
Reduce activities that reproduce the pain and protect the area from another impact. Cold therapy wrapped in a cloth may ease pain and swelling for short periods; avoid placing ice directly on skin. Keep gentle movement within a comfortable range rather than forcing a painful stretch. As tenderness settles, gradual return to normal activity is usually more suitable than suddenly testing the muscle with strenuous exercise. A clinician or physiotherapist can guide recovery, and vigorous massage over a fresh bruise may aggravate bleeding in the tissue.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical assessment if pain or swelling is severe, the muscle becomes very tight, you cannot bear weight or use the limb normally, or numbness and weakness develop. Seek urgent care after a major impact when the limb looks deformed, the skin becomes unusually pale or cold, or pain escalates quickly. Assessment is also sensible when bruising keeps expanding, symptoms are not easing, or you take medicine that affects bleeding.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the injury appears limited to a contusion, which movements are safe now, and how to recognise a deeper muscle or bone injury. You can also ask when to begin strengthening and whether physiotherapy is useful for restoring movement.

Questions people ask
Can a muscle contusion hurt without visible bruising?
Yes. Deeper tissue injury may cause pain and tenderness before colour changes appear, and some bruises remain subtle on the skin.
Should I massage a fresh muscle bruise?
Avoid firm massage early after an impact because pressure may worsen swelling or bleeding. Ask a clinician when hands-on treatment is appropriate.
