What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

Pleural mesothelioma affects the lining around the lungs. Irritation or fluid around a lung can lead to a Persistent Cough, Shortness of Breath, chest discomfort, or pain that is worse with deep breathing. Some people notice tiredness, reduced appetite, sweating, or weight loss. Symptoms can emerge gradually and overlap with infection, lung disease, or other causes, so they cannot identify mesothelioma on their own.

Arrange medical review for persistent breathing symptoms, chest pain, or a cough that does not settle, particularly if you have had asbestos exposure. Assessment may include chest imaging, fluid testing, or a tissue biopsy. Fluid around the lung, called Malignant Pleural Effusion when cancer cells are present, may need separate management. Treatment discussions can include Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, or Palliative Care.

Seek emergency help for severe or sudden breathlessness, blue lips, crushing chest pain, fainting, coughing blood, or new confusion. Contact your clinical team promptly if breathing becomes harder when lying down, chest swelling develops, or prescribed relief stops working.
