What Are the Symptoms of Melasma?

Short answer
Melasma symptoms are usually flat, uneven brown or grey-brown patches, most often on the cheeks, forehead, nose, upper lip, or jawline.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How melasma appears
The patches are generally smooth rather than raised, and they often form on both sides of the face in a similar pattern. Colour can range from light brown to deeper grey-brown, depending partly on how deeply pigment sits in the skin. Melasma may become more noticeable after sunlight or visible light exposure and can appear darker during hormonal changes. It usually does not cause pain, scaling, or discharge. Facial pigmentation has several possible causes, so a diagnosis should not be made from colour alone. Dark Patches On Skin and Uneven Skin Tone can have different explanations.
What to do about facial patches
Arrange a dermatology assessment when pigmentation is persistent, spreading, or affecting your confidence. Bring a list of skincare products and medicines, and mention pregnancy, contraception, or other hormonal changes when relevant. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection, shade, and a hat can help reduce darkening. Use gentle, non-irritating products and avoid picking or aggressive scrubbing. Depending on your skin and diagnosis, treatment may include Hydroquinone Treatment, a Chemical Peel, Microneedling, Skin Brightening Treatment, Laser Toning, or Picosecond Laser Treatment.
When to seek care
Melasma itself is usually a cosmetic colour change, but seek prompt assessment for a patch that is raised, rapidly changing, bleeding, crusting, painful, or unlike the surrounding pigmentation. Sudden widespread colour change or irritation after a new product also warrants medical advice. Stop a product that causes burning, swelling, or blistering and ask a clinician how to restore the skin barrier.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what type of pigmentation is present, whether a medicine or hormone may contribute, which sunscreen and active ingredients suit your skin, how long a treatment trial should last, and how to reduce the chance of darkening after a procedure.

Questions people ask
Is melasma raised above the skin?
Usually no. Melasma commonly appears as flat areas of altered colour rather than bumps or sores.
Can melasma return after treatment?
It can recur or darken, particularly with light exposure or hormonal changes, so maintenance and sun protection may be part of care.
