What are the symptoms of herniated disc?

Symptoms depend on the disc location and the nearby nerve that is irritated. A lower-back disc can cause pain from the back or buttock down the leg, sometimes with altered sensation or weakness in the foot. A neck disc can send pain, tingling, or numbness into the shoulder, arm, or hand. Coughing, sneezing, bending, or sitting may aggravate symptoms for some people. Others have a herniated disc without noticeable symptoms.

Back muscle spasm can occur when muscles tighten around a painful area. Radiating leg symptoms may be described as sciatica, while arm symptoms can fit cervical radiculopathy; these labels describe patterns and do not replace an examination.

Note where pain travels, whether sensation or strength has changed, and which positions alter it. Keep gently active within tolerable limits and avoid lifting or twisting that sharply worsens symptoms. A clinician can test reflexes, sensation, and strength and decide whether scans or treatment are appropriate. Care may include guided exercise, pain relief, an injection, or surgery in selected situations.

Seek emergency care for new difficulty starting or controlling urination, loss of bowel control, numbness around the groin or inner thighs, or rapidly worsening weakness in both legs. These bladder or bowel changes with back pain can signal severe nerve compression. Seek prompt assessment for new limb weakness, fever, major trauma, or pain that is severe and persistent.
