What are the symptoms of heat exhaustion?

The body loses water and salts while trying to cool itself, often after exercise or time in a hot environment. Skin may feel clammy, and you may look pale or flushed. Muscle cramps, tiredness and a fast heartbeat can accompany the main symptoms. Heat intolerance can make hot conditions harder to manage, but symptoms can also develop in someone who is not usually sensitive to heat.

Move to a cool place, loosen extra clothing and rest. Sip cool water or an oral rehydration drink if you are awake and able to swallow. Cool the skin with wet cloths or a fan. Stop activity and ask someone to stay with you while symptoms improve. If drinking is not possible or dehydration is significant, a clinician may consider IV fluid therapy.

Call emergency services for confusion, fainting, seizures, loss of consciousness, very hot skin or inability to drink; these signs can indicate heatstroke. Seek medical care if symptoms worsen, do not improve with cooling and fluids, or include repeated vomiting. Do not give fluids to someone who is confused or unconscious.
