What are the symptoms of frozen shoulder?

Short answer
Symptoms of frozen shoulder include shoulder pain, progressive stiffness, reduced movement in several directions, and pain that may disturb sleep.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main limitation
- Reduced shoulder movement in several directions
- Often troublesome
- Reaching, dressing, and turning in bed
Recognising the pattern
Frozen Shoulder usually develops with pain followed by increasing restriction, although the order and intensity vary. Reaching overhead, placing a hand behind the back, fastening clothing, washing hair, or reaching across the body may become difficult. The shoulder can feel stiff in more than one direction, rather than only hurting during one specific action. Night pain may make it uncomfortable to lie on the affected side or wake you when turning in bed. Rotator Cuff Tendinitis can also cause shoulder pain, but the examination pattern helps distinguish it from a broadly restricted joint.
What you can do
Use the arm gently within a tolerable range and avoid forceful stretching that sharply increases pain. Physiotherapy can provide graded mobility work and help preserve function during the stiff phase. Hydrotherapy may make gentle movement easier for some people. A clinician may discuss a Cortisone Injection when pain is limiting sleep or rehabilitation. Shoulder Arthroscopy is reserved for selected cases when symptoms remain limiting after appropriate non-surgical care.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment when shoulder pain and Joint Stiffness persist, movement is progressively disappearing, or dressing and sleep are affected. Seek urgent care after an injury that causes deformity or inability to lift the arm, or if the shoulder is hot, red, markedly swollen, or accompanied by fever. Sudden arm weakness, chest discomfort, or breathlessness requires urgent medical attention rather than routine shoulder review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the restriction fits frozen shoulder, what movements are safe, how pain control may support therapy, and what timeframe should trigger a review of progress.
