Short answer

Frontal fibrosing alopecia commonly causes a gradually receding hairline, eyebrow thinning, and reduced hair growth along the affected skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common areas
Frontal hairline, temples, eyebrows, and sometimes eyelashes or body hair
Skin changes
Pale, smooth, shiny, red, or slightly bumpy skin may occur
Pattern
Hair loss often develops gradually

How the symptoms can appear

The hairline may move backwards slowly, sometimes as a band of lighter or smoother skin at the front of the scalp. Hair loss can also affect the temples and sideburn area. Eyebrows may become thinner in patches or across much of the brow, and some people notice loss of individual eyebrow hairs before the scalp change is obvious.

The scalp may look pale, shiny, or slightly scarred where follicles have been damaged. Itching, tenderness, burning, redness around hair follicles, or small raised bumps can occur, although some people have little discomfort. Loss of eyelashes or body hair may also occur. These findings can overlap with other forms of scarring alopecia, so an examination is needed to identify the pattern.

What to do if you notice these signs

Arrange a dermatology assessment if hairline recession or eyebrow thinning is progressive, especially when the skin looks smooth or shiny. Take dated photographs in the same lighting and mention itching, pain, redness, or recent changes in medicines or hair products. Avoid tight hairstyles and repeated chemical irritation while the cause is being assessed.

A clinician may examine the scalp and eyebrows closely and may discuss treatments aimed at reducing inflammation and protecting remaining follicles. Options can include prescription medicine or injections into selected areas, depending on the examination and your health history.

When to seek care

Book an appointment promptly when hair loss is continuing, the eyebrows are thinning, or the scalp becomes sore, red, or bumpy. Earlier assessment can help distinguish scarring hair loss from non-scarring causes and guide a plan before more follicles are affected. Seek urgent medical advice for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, or fever.

Questions for your doctor

Could the hairline and eyebrow pattern indicate scarring alopecia? Would a close scalp examination or biopsy be useful? Which treatment is suitable for slowing inflammation, and what changes should prompt a follow-up?
