What are the symptoms of dyshidrotic eczema?

The first sign may be prickling, burning or itching before small fluid-filled blisters become visible. The blisters often sit closely together and can make gripping, walking or using the hands uncomfortable. After they settle, the surface may peel, become scaly, and develop painful cracks. Flares can affect one hand or foot, both sides, or several areas at once. Symptoms can resemble other causes of [Skin Blisters](/symptoms/skin-blisters/), so location and examination matter.

Dyshidrotic eczema is also called pompholyx. It is not diagnosed from itch alone; a clinician may check for contact irritation, infection or another blistering condition.

Keep the area clean and moisturised with a fragrance-free emollient, especially after washing. Use lukewarm water, mild cleanser and protective gloves for wet work or cleaning chemicals. Do not deliberately burst the blisters. Arrange medical care if the rash is new, recurrent, interfering with walking or hand use, or not improving with gentle protection. Seek prompt assessment for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, yellow crusting, severe pain or fever, which may indicate infection. Get urgent help for rapidly spreading blisters or involvement of the eyes, mouth or other mucous membranes.
