Short answer

Symptoms of droopy eyelids include excess upper-eyelid skin, a hooded appearance, under-eye fullness and reduced upward or side vision when the skin hangs over the eye.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How droopy eyelids can feel and look

Dermatochalasis is loose or excess eyelid skin. You may notice folds resting on the upper lids, heaviness late in the day, or a tired-looking expression. Some people see puffiness or bags beneath the eyes as well. If the fold reaches the lashes or blocks part of the visual field, reading, driving, or looking upward may require extra effort. These changes can affect one eye or both and may develop gradually.

Droopy eyelids are different from sudden eyelid drooping caused by a nerve or muscle problem. A clinician can examine the eyelid position, skin and vision to separate these possibilities from other causes.

What you can do next

Note when the heaviness appears and whether it changes with fatigue, lighting, or covering either eye. Avoid pulling or rubbing the eyelid skin. Arrange an eye or dermatology assessment if the fold affects daily activities, causes eye strain, or changes your field of vision. Depending on the examination, options may include [Eyelid Surgery](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/blepharoplasty/), while non-surgical approaches such as [Radiofrequency Skin Tightening](/treatments/laser-and-energy/radiofrequency-skin-tightening/) or [Plasma Pen Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/plasma-pen-treatment/) may be discussed for selected concerns.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden drooping, double vision, unequal pupils, facial weakness, severe headache, eye pain, or loss of vision. These symptoms do not fit simple gradual excess skin and need prompt evaluation. Arrange routine care for slowly worsening obstruction, persistent eye fatigue, or difficulty keeping the eyes open.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the eyelid skin is narrowing your visual field, whether the change is dermatochalasis or another form of eyelid droop, and which treatment would address function as well as appearance.

Questions people ask

Can droopy eyelids affect vision?

Yes. Excess skin can hang over the lashes or visual field and make upward or side vision harder.

Are under-eye bags the same as droopy eyelids?

No. They can occur together, but bags are fullness beneath the eyes while dermatochalasis refers mainly to excess eyelid skin.
