What are the symptoms of skin yeast infection?

The rash commonly affects warm, damp areas such as the groin, underarms, beneath the breasts, between abdominal folds, or between fingers and toes. The skin may look bright red or darker than nearby skin, feel raw, and develop cracks or a moist surface. Small separate spots can sit just outside the main rash. Itching is common, but soreness and burning may be more noticeable where skin rubs. Nail-fold involvement can cause tenderness and swelling around a nail.

Gently wash and dry the area, patting rather than rubbing. Choose breathable clothing, change damp garments, and avoid fragranced products on the rash. A pharmacist or clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment; oral antifungal treatment is reserved for selected situations and needs medical guidance. Do not assume every fold rash is yeast, because irritation, bacterial infection, and other conditions can look similar.

Seek prompt care if redness spreads quickly, pain is marked, the skin becomes hot, pus or fever develops, or you feel unwell. Arrange an assessment when the rash involves the eyes or mouth, keeps returning, affects a nail, or does not improve with appropriate treatment. People with reduced immunity or poorly controlled diabetes should seek advice early.
