What are the symptoms of Crohn's disease?

Diarrhoea may be frequent or urgent, while Abdominal Pain can range from cramping to a more constant ache. Blood in Stool may be visible or found only through testing. During active inflammation, appetite can fall and Unintentional Weight Loss may occur. Some people also report tiredness, fever, mouth ulcers, joint aches, or changes around the anus. Symptoms can come and go, and several digestive conditions can look similar. The pattern, examination, and tests are needed to work out whether Crohn's disease is present.

Book a GP Consultation for persistent diarrhoea, recurring abdominal pain, blood in stool, or unexplained weight change. Keep a short record of bowel frequency, pain, visible blood, food triggers, fever, and medicines. A Blood Test may help look for inflammation, anaemia, or other clues; a clinician may recommend additional investigations. Do not make major dietary restrictions without advice, especially if appetite or weight is already falling.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen with vomiting, heavy or persistent rectal bleeding, black stools, fainting, confusion, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Prompt assessment is also needed when fever accompanies a marked change in bowel symptoms or when a person cannot keep fluids down. These signs need attention even if Crohn's disease has not been diagnosed.

Ask what could explain the symptoms, which tests are appropriate, and how to maintain nutrition and hydration while waiting. Tell the clinician about family history, recent antibiotics or travel, joint or skin symptoms, bleeding, and any change in weight.
