What are the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome commonly causes numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the hand and wrist. Symptoms often affect the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger, while the little finger is usually spared.

Tingling or pins and needles may wake you at night or appear while holding a phone, steering wheel, or book. Shaking or changing the position of the hand may briefly ease the sensation. As symptoms continue, a person may feel clumsy, drop objects, struggle with buttons, or notice a weaker grip. Numbness can become more persistent and may involve the palm near the thumb. Similar complaints can come from the neck, another nerve, or a repetitive strain injury, so symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis.

Arrange a clinical assessment if hand symptoms recur, disturb sleep, or interfere with work and household tasks. Keep the wrist in a comfortable, neutral position and take breaks from activities that repeatedly bend it or require forceful gripping. A clinician may discuss Splinting, activity changes, or other treatment. Persistent symptoms or muscle weakness may lead to discussion of Carpal Tunnel Release.

Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening weakness, sudden loss of hand function, severe swelling after an injury, or numbness accompanied by facial drooping, speech difficulty, or weakness elsewhere. Arrange routine care when numbness becomes constant, grip strength is declining, or symptoms are spreading up the arm.

Ask which fingers are involved, whether the symptoms fit median nerve compression, whether another nerve or the neck needs assessment, and how long to try a splint before reviewing progress.
