Allergic rhinitis, also called hay fever, develops when the nose reacts to an inhaled trigger such as pollen, house dust mites, mould, or animal dander. The lining of the nose becomes swollen and produces extra mucus. You may notice an itchy nose or throat, itchy eyes, watery eyes, reduced sense of smell, coughing, or tiredness from disrupted sleep. Symptoms can be seasonal or continue whenever the trigger is present.

Notice when symptoms start and what you were exposed to, then reduce contact where practical. Showering after outdoor activities, changing clothes, keeping bedding clean, and ventilating rooms appropriately may help. Saline rinses can clear mucus when used safely with suitable water. A pharmacist or clinician can discuss nasal sprays or allergy medication, including correct technique and possible side effects. Avoid inserting cotton buds into the nose, especially if dryness or bleeding is present.

Seek medical advice if nasal blockage interferes with sleep, symptoms persist despite self-care, or you repeatedly lose your sense of smell. Get prompt help for breathing difficulty, facial pain with fever, one-sided blockage, or nosebleeds that are heavy or difficult to stop. Wheezing may suggest an airway problem alongside the nasal allergy and deserves assessment.
