Prehabilitation may help restore movement and muscle control before a treatment decision, while a return-to-sport programme should be guided rather than rushed.

Seek urgent care after a major knee injury if the joint is visibly deformed, the foot is cold or numb, pain is severe, or you cannot bear weight. Prompt assessment is also needed when swelling is rapid or the knee repeatedly gives way. These findings can accompany significant ligament, bone, or circulation problems.
