What are the risk factors for nail separation?

Repeated tapping, pressure from tight shoes, picking under the nail, manicures, artificial nails, and chemical exposure can loosen the nail plate. Prolonged wet work may weaken the seal and encourage infection. Nail fungus can cause discolouration, thickening, and lifting, while nail psoriasis may produce pits, roughness, or separation. Less commonly, skin disease, thyroid problems, medication effects, or injury elsewhere can be involved, so the appearance of the nail and the surrounding skin both matter.

Keep the nail short by trimming only the detached edge, and do not pull it off or scrape underneath. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical work and dry hands and feet carefully. Pause polish, gel, acrylic products, and harsh removers until the cause is clear. Choose shoes with enough room at the toes. A clinician may examine clippings or the nail surface before recommending antifungal, anti-inflammatory, or other treatment.

Arrange an assessment when separation affects several nails, keeps returning, reaches the base, or occurs without an obvious injury. Seek prompt care for pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, a dark streak, or a nail that changes quickly. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should seek advice early for a painful or infected-looking nail.

Ask whether the pattern fits trauma, nail fungus, nail psoriasis, or another cause; whether testing is needed; how to protect the nail during regrowth; and which manicure or footwear changes would reduce repeated injury.
