What are the risk factors for laryngitis?

A Common Cold can inflame the upper airways and voice box. Speaking loudly, singing for long periods, shouting or repeated throat clearing can strain the vocal folds. Smoke, dust and dry air may add irritation. Acid Reflux can reach the throat and voice box, sometimes causing hoarseness or a need to clear the throat even without obvious heartburn.

These factors raise the chance of laryngitis but do not establish its cause. Hoarseness may also have other explanations, especially when it persists.

Rest your voice, speak gently rather than whispering, drink fluids and avoid smoke. Use a humidifier if indoor air is dry, and reduce repeated throat clearing by sipping water. If reflux seems relevant, note whether symptoms follow late meals, lying down or particular foods, then discuss the pattern with a clinician.

Get medical advice if hoarseness lasts beyond a short illness, keeps returning or interferes with speaking.
