What are the first signs of vulvodynia?

Vulvodynia is persistent or recurring pain in the vulval area without a single identifiable cause. Early symptoms may feel like burning, prickling, irritation, aching or a scraped sensation. Pain can be focused near the vaginal opening or spread across the vulva. Sitting, tight clothing, wiping, inserting a tampon, or sexual contact may bring it on, while some people feel discomfort at rest. Redness or visible skin changes are not required. Similar symptoms can come from infection, skin conditions, hormonal changes or nerve irritation, so an examination matters.

Record when pain appears, its quality, location and triggers, along with any discharge, itching or urinary symptoms. Use plain, unscented products, avoid scrubbing the area, and choose loose breathable clothing while waiting for an appointment. Do not repeatedly self-treat suspected thrush if symptoms keep returning. A clinician can check for other causes and discuss options such as pelvic floor physiotherapy, pain management or vaginal dilator therapy when appropriate.

Arrange an assessment for vulval pain that persists, recurs, interferes with sitting or intimacy, or has no clear explanation. Seek prompt care for fever, new sores or blisters, marked swelling, unusual bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, or difficulty passing urine. Sudden severe pain also deserves urgent review. Pain during sex is a symptom to discuss, not proof of a particular condition.
