What Are the First Signs of Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins develop when veins in the leg do not move blood back towards the heart efficiently. Early changes may appear as small raised, rope-like veins on the calf, thigh, or behind the knee. Some people notice tired or heavy legs before the veins become prominent. Symptoms may be more noticeable at the end of the day, after long periods of sitting or standing, or in warm weather.

Fine red or purple branching lines are called spider veins and are different from larger, bulging varicose veins. Skin near a longstanding vein problem can become dry, irritated, darker, or sore; this needs an assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Keep gently active, change position regularly, and avoid remaining still for long stretches. When resting, raising your legs may reduce the feeling of pressure or swelling. Comfortable footwear and avoiding tight clothing around the waist or legs may also help.

Get emergency help for sudden leg swelling with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or coughing blood. These symptoms can signal a serious circulation problem and should not be assessed only from the appearance of the veins.
