What are the first signs of prostatitis?

Prostatitis describes inflammation or irritation of the prostate. Discomfort may be felt between the scrotum and anus, in the lower abdomen, penis, or lower back. Some people notice a weak stream, frequent urination, pain with ejaculation, or blood in the urine. Fever and chills can occur when infection is involved. A urinary tract infection can cause similar urinary symptoms, so symptoms do not identify the cause on their own.

Book a GP consultation if painful urination, urgency, pelvic pain, or a changed urine stream persists. A clinician may ask about the onset, examine you, and test a urine sample. Drink normally unless advised otherwise, and avoid taking antibiotics left from an earlier illness. Antibiotic treatment may be considered when bacterial infection is suspected, while other forms need a different plan.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, develop fever with shaking chills, become confused or faint, or feel suddenly very unwell. Blood in the urine should be assessed, especially when it is visible or accompanied by pain. Severe worsening pelvic or abdominal pain also needs prompt attention.
