What are the first signs of mesothelioma?

Pleural mesothelioma affects the lining around the lung. Irritation or thickening in this lining can make breathing feel restricted and may cause a cough, chest pain, or breathlessness. A build-up of fluid, called a malignant pleural effusion, can add pressure and worsen breathing. These symptoms also have many non-cancer causes, so they do not confirm mesothelioma by themselves.

Arrange a medical assessment if a cough, breathlessness, or chest discomfort persists or changes. Tell the clinician about past work or environmental exposure to asbestos, the timing of symptoms, and whether they affect activity or sleep. Assessment may include an examination, chest imaging, and sampling of fluid or tissue when needed.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, sudden chest pain, blue lips, confusion, or coughing up a large amount of blood. Prompt care is also appropriate when breathing becomes difficult at rest or symptoms prevent normal activities.
