What are the first signs of measles?

Measles commonly starts with a respiratory illness rather than a rash. Fever may accompany cough, a runny nose, sore or red eyes and general tiredness. Small spots inside the mouth can occur, followed by a blotchy rash that often begins on the face or hairline and spreads down the body. Swollen glands may occur with infections but are not specific to measles. Because early measles can resemble other viral illnesses, symptoms and exposure history need clinical assessment.

Avoid close contact with other people, especially babies, pregnant people and anyone with reduced immunity, until you have received advice. Phone a GP Consultation service before attending in person so staff can reduce exposure to others. Mention recent travel, a known contact, vaccination history and when the fever or rash began. MMR Vaccination is the main preventive measure and can be discussed with a clinician when appropriate.

Arrange prompt medical advice for fever with a spreading rash or a known measles exposure. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, severe drowsiness, dehydration, a seizure, confusion or a child who is becoming rapidly more unwell. Do not arrive unannounced at a clinic if measles is possible, because it spreads easily through the air.
