What are the first signs of lymphoma?

Lymphoma starts in cells of the lymphatic or immune system. A painless lump in the neck, armpit, or groin can be a presentation of lymphoma, although swollen nodes are frequently caused by infection or inflammation. Some people develop ongoing fever, sweating at night, itching, tiredness, or weight loss without trying. Lymphoma affecting the chest may cause cough, chest pressure, or breathlessness; involvement of the abdomen can cause fullness or discomfort. Symptoms vary by the type and location of disease, and they do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.

Arrange a medical assessment for a lymph node that persists, grows, feels firm, or has no clear explanation. Record any fever, night sweating, itching, fatigue, appetite change, or weight change, along with when each began. Examination may be followed by blood tests, imaging such as a PET-CT scan, or a biopsy when needed. Treatment depends on the lymphoma type and extent and may include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, CAR T-cell therapy, or an autologous stem cell transplant in selected situations.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pressure, difficulty swallowing, confusion, or a fever with severe weakness. Contact a clinician promptly for a rapidly enlarging node, repeated unexplained fever, soaking night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. These findings have other possible causes, but persistence or a combination of symptoms warrants assessment.
