What are the first signs of hiatus hernia?

A hiatus hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves up through the opening in the diaphragm. Some hernias cause no symptoms. When the valve between the oesophagus and stomach is affected, stomach contents can flow upwards and lead to acid reflux, burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid in the mouth, or indigestion. Burping and discomfort may be worse after meals, when bending, or when lying down.

These symptoms do not prove that a hernia is present. A GP can consider other causes and decide whether examination, treatment, or further testing is appropriate.

Book a GP consultation if heartburn keeps returning, interrupts sleep, or needs frequent self-treatment. Note when symptoms happen, which foods or drinks precede them, and whether swallowing feels stuck. Smaller meals, staying upright after eating, and avoiding personal triggers may reduce reflux while you arrange advice. Medicines for acid reflux should be selected with attention to your health and other treatments.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe chest pain, breathlessness, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, or food becoming completely stuck. New or progressive difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or persistent vomiting also needs timely medical assessment.
