What are the first signs of Helicobacter pylori infection?

H. pylori is a bacterium that can live in the stomach lining. When it causes symptoms, discomfort may feel like burning, aching, or fullness in the upper abdomen, sometimes with early fullness after eating. Indigestion, bloating, and frequent burping can occur, but these symptoms also have many other possible explanations. Some people have the infection without noticeable symptoms. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

A clinician may use a breath test or stool test to look for the infection. An upper endoscopy may be considered when symptoms need a closer look, or when there are warning features.

Arrange a medical assessment if symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with eating and sleep. Keep a short record of discomfort, meals, medicines, and changes in bowel movements. Do not start leftover antibiotics or someone else’s stomach medicine; incorrect treatment can make testing less useful and may not clear the infection. Your clinician can explain whether medicines that reduce stomach acid need to be paused before testing.

Seek urgent medical help for black, tarry stools, vomiting blood, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, repeated vomiting, or trouble swallowing. These signs can indicate bleeding or another problem requiring prompt assessment and are not a way to judge whether a symptom is caused by H. pylori.
