What are the first signs of boils?

A boil is an infection centred around a hair follicle. The area may feel warmer than nearby skin, grow over a short period, and become sore when clothing or movement rubs it. Boils can occur on the face, neck, armpits, buttocks, thighs, or other areas with hair follicles. A group of connected boils can form a larger inflamed area. A lump is not automatically a boil, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Keep the area clean and cover it with a clean dressing if it leaks. Warm, moist compresses may ease discomfort and encourage natural drainage. Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump, because this can spread infection into nearby tissue. Wash your hands after touching the area and do not share towels, razors, or clothing. A clinician can decide whether you need antibiotics or a procedure such as abscess drainage.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if redness is spreading, pain is severe, the boil is on the face or near the eye, or you feel feverish or unwell. Seek urgent help for confusion, marked weakness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening swelling. Medical advice is also sensible for repeated boils, several boils at once, or a boil in someone with diabetes or a weakened immune system.

Ask whether the lump needs drainage, how to dress it safely, and whether signs suggest a deeper infection or a recurring skin condition.
